Threat Database Adware GlobalEngineSearch

GlobalEngineSearch

GlobalEngineSearch is an adware threat that is targeting Mac users. It spread through manipulative distribution tactics designed to drop the app on the user's computer without attracting too much attention. Two of the most widespread methods employed by these apps are bundling - when the installation process is hidden inside the installation settings of another more popular freeware app and being delivered through fake software installers. GlobalEngineSearch has also been designated as a (PUP) by the cybersecurity community due to this deceptive behaviour.

While PUPs almost never pose any direct danger to the system they are installed on, that doesn't necessarily mean that they do not increase the security risks faced by the user. The main purpose of adware apps such as GlobalEngineSearch is to run intrusive advertising campaigns that could generate ads leading to suspicious places on the Internet. By clicking on the presented ads, users could be redirected to pages dedicated to popular online scams, domains spreading additional barely-functional PUPs, or even compromised websites delivering malware threats.

In addition, GlobalEngineSearch has also been equipped with certain capabilities usually associated with browser hijackers. The app will take over certain settings of the user's web browser and modify them to open a sponsored third-party address. The homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine could all be modified. The app will then prevent the user from changing the settings back to their original states.

The best way to deal with a PUP is to remove it with a professional anti-malware program. Run a thorough scan of the affected system and get rid of all suspicious apps that are detected.
