Threat Database Adware FunctionLogInput

FunctionLogInput

FunctionLogInput is an application spreading through the Apple ecosystem that has been classified as a browser hijacker. FunctionLogInput targets are Mac users predominantly. It should be noted that adware, browser hijackers, and other dubious applications are almost always flagged as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) due to the misleading and deceptive tactics they use for distribution.

The goal of FunctionLogInput is to install itself on the user's Mac system, without alerting the user preferably, and then taking over specific browser settings immediately. Browser hijackers go after the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine. These three settings are not chosen randomly. They are the perfected vehicles through which the browser hijacker can start promoting and generating artificial traffic for a sponsored address. FunctionLogInput is used to promote the search.imah5hf.com address, a fake search engine. In addition, to modifying the browser setting to open the sponsored page on Chome browsers, FuntionLogInput can exploit the legitimate 'Managed by your organization' feature to further limit the user's actions.

Fake search engines are called that because they lack the most basic functionality - the ability to produce search results. Instead, any search query inputted in the affected browser's URL address will first go to search.imah5hf.com after which, they will be redirected to a legitimate engine. However, keep in mind that using dubious search engines could lead to not-entirely-reliable results as many third-party ads or sponsored results can be injected into the displayed list.

PUPs also are known for spying on the browsing activities of the users. These applications can collect various information that could start with the browsing and search histories and reach all the way to system details such as IP address, geolocation, ISP and more.
