Threat Database Ransomware Frlock Ransomware

Frlock Ransomware

The Frlock Ransomware can be grouped alongside other threats such as Grlock, Itlock, Czlock and Zalock. The main difference between them is the extension they use to mark the files they encrypt, otherwise, their functionality is virtually identical. That is not so surprising having in mind that all of them are classified as variants belonging to the MedusaLocker Ransomware family.

When the Frlock Ransomware manages to infiltrate a computer successfully, it will proceed to initiate an encryption routine that will lock almost all of the files stored there. As we said, all affected files will have '.frlock' appended to their original names as a new extension. Afterward, the threat will deliver its ransom note in the form of files named 'Recovery_Instructions.html.' The ransom-bearing files will be generated in every folder containing encrypted data.

According to the instructions, the Frlock Ransomware uses a combination of AES + RSA cryptographic algorithms for its encryption. Affected users are instructed to contact the cybercriminals responsible for the threat to learn the exact amount of the ransom they will have to pay to receive the decryption key and software tool. The main communication channel is through a dedicated website that is accessible only through the TOR browser. As a secondary method, users can send an email to two addresses - 'helper@atacdi.com' and 'helper@buildingwin.com.' Up to 3 non-important files can be attached to the messages and will be decrypted for free.

The hackers behind the Frlock Ransomware claim that they have been able to collect data from the compromised computer. The collected information is supposedly being stored on a private server and will be either released to the public or sold to interested parties. To prevent this outcome, victims are urged to pay the asked ransom.
