Threat Database Adware FrequencySignal

FrequencySignal

FrequencySignal is an application that combines the functionalities of browser hijackers and adware. It is offered mainly to Mac users but the application doesn't rely on being downloaded and installed willingly. Instead, it employs deceptive tactics designed to mask its installation from the user's attention such as bundling or being injected into a fake software updater/installer.

No matter what method FrequencySignal used to infiltrate a Mac system, once there, it will begin to generate intrusive and unwanted advertisements. The browsing experience on the affected device will be impacted significantly. Although the advertisements could show alluring offers or deals, clicking on any of them should be approached with caution. Engaging with an ad could trigger a forced redirect to a dubious third-party website. It is not uncommon for users to land on phishing or deceiving pages that try to obtain sensitive data from their visitors.

The activities of FrequencySignal do not stop there. The PUP also will establish control over the Web browser to promote a questionable search engine. In this case, the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine will be set to open Safe Finder via akamaihd.net. Fake search engines are incapable of delivering any meaningful search results on their own. They redirect the user's search queries to one of the legitimate engines such as Yahoo, Bing or Google.

There is another serious red flag associated with having a PUP installed on your Mac computer. Nearly all applications of this type are capable of collecting user-related data. The accessed information usually includes the browsing history, search history and clicked URLs. Some PUPs also attempt to harvest sensitive data saved into the affected browser. If that is the case, users risk having their banking, payment, or credit/debit card numbers collected, packaged and uploaded to a remote server.
