Another intrusive application aimed at Mac users, FormulaBuffer is rarely installed willingly, and with a good reason. The application combines the capabilities of both adware and a browser hijacker to generate as much revenue for its creators as possible. To infiltrate the user's Mac device unnoticed, FormulaBuffer could be placed as part of suspicious software bundles or hidden inside fake software installers.
Exactly as it should be expected from an adware application, FormulaBuffer runs an unwanted ad campaign that will flood the device with annoying advertisements. Furthermore, the generated advertisements could be promoting various tactics or lead to phishing pages, fake giveaways, or even unsafe websites spreading serious malware threats.
While present on the Mac, FormulaBuffer also will affect the installed Web browsers. By modifying the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings, the application will start creating traffic towards the sponsored page.
In the vast majority of cases, that is a fake search engine incapable of delivering any results on its own. Instead, users will be shown results taken from legitimate engines (Yahoo, Bing and Google). However, it is possible that the initiated search is taken through a dubious engine, resulting in inaccurate, low-quality results with numerous sponsored ad links or promoted websites.
