Threat Database Adware FlexProduct

FlexProduct

FlexProduct is a dubious application that targets Mac users. Its goal is to generate monetary gains for its operators by acting as adware and a browser hijacker. Typically, applications of this type remain unnoticed while they are being installed on the Mac due to the questionable techniques employed in their distribution. This deceptive behavior classifies them as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) as well.

The advertisements generated by FlexProduct can appear as pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text links and more. In addition, they may be injected into unrelated websites, bringing the overall browsing experience down. However, more importantly, these advertisements may take users to suspicious places, such as sites running online tactics, phishing pages, offers for additional PUPs, etc.

At the same time, FlexProduct will take over the installed browsers and force them to open a sponsored address. Usually, the browser hijacker application will affect the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine settings. As for the promoted page, in the vast majority of cases, it will belong to a fake search engine.

Users should be warned that as long as the PUP is present on their Mac systems, it may be spying on the browsing activities carried out on the device. Numerous details may be harvested and transmitted to a server controlled by the PUP's operators. The data could include the entire browsing history, all clicked URLs, initiated searches, IP address, browser type, ISP, geolocation and much more. Although PUPs are not considered to represent a direct threat, they should be removed as soon as possible, with a professional security solution preferably.
