Threat Database Adware FilterSoftware

FilterSoftware

Mac users should be on the lookout for another dubious application that might be trying to sneak its way onto their computers. Named FilterSoftware, this intrusive application is capable of acting both as adware and a browser hijacker. Typically, applications of this type do not wait for users to discover, download and install them willingly. Instead, they employ various underhanded distribution tactics to enter the targeted devices stealthily without attracting the user's attention. The reliance on methods such as bundling or fake installers classifies these applications as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

As we said, FilterSoftware will try to monetize its presence on the Mac in several different ways. First, it will begin delivering intrusive and untrustworthy advertisements to the system. The advertising materials may be presented as pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text links and more. At the same time, they may be injected into the sites visited by the user, in an attempt to make them appear more legitimate.

In addition, FilterSoftware will take control over the installed Web browser. By modifying the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings, the PUP will generate as much artificial traffic towards a promoted address as possible. Typically, the promoted page belongs to a fake search engine that is incapable of producing results on its own. Users will instead be shown search results taken from a legitimate engine. In this case, the results are generated by search.yahoo.com.

Finally, most PUPs have another nasty functionality - they are capable of collecting information and transmitting it to a remote server. The intrusive applications may be spying on the users browsing activities, while also gathering device details such as IP address, browser type, geolocation, ISP and more.
