Threat Database Ransomware Farlock Ransomware

Farlock Ransomware

Another ransomware variant has been identified by infosec researchers. Tracked as the Farlock Ransomware and as a variant of the MedusaLocker Ransomware family, the threat's harmful capabilities can wreak havoc on the computers it infects by encrypting the files stored there. The victim's documents, PDFs, archives, databases, etc. will be rendered unusable. The attackers will then demand a payment in exchange for the decryption key and software tool in their possession.

The exact extension that the Farlock Ransomware uses to mark the encrypted files depends on the specific version of the threat. Some users may notice that their files now have '.farlock3' appended to their names, while others may see their files carrying a '.farlock11' extension. All Farlock versions deliver a ransom note as an HTML file named 'HOW_TO_RECOVER_DATA.html.'

Ransom Note's Details

According to the ransom-demanding message, apart from locking the victim's files, the attackers also have collected data that they now threaten to release to the public or sell to interested parties, if their demands are not met. They also offer to decrypt up to 3 small files for free.

Victims can reach out and establish contact with the hackers via a dedicated website hosted on the TOR network. As a backup, the note also mentions two email addresses - 'ithelp02@decorous.cyou' and 'ithelp02@wholeness.business.' While the exact sum of the ransom is not revealed, the note concludes with a warning that after 72 hours have passed, the sum demanded by the hackers will be higher.

The full text of the note is:
