Threat Database Mac Malware EssentialModule

EssentialModule

EssentialModule is an intrusive application targeting Mac users. The application is being promoted via deceptive and untrustworthy websites. Reliance on such questionable distribution methods is one of the main characteristics associated with PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Once EssentialModule has been installed on the Mac, it also will reveal its adware capabilities. Users are likely to start receiving numerous advertisements, notifications, pop-ups, etc. Apart from being annoying distractions, the displayed advertisements could offer fake giveaways or even phishing and technical support tactics hidden under various false scenarios. Users also may encounter advertisements for additional PUPs masquerading as legitimate and useful software products. Interacting with the generated advertisements could trigger redirects that will take users to more untrustworthy destinations.

PUPs, adware, browser hijackers, and other applications of this type are commonly equipped with data-tracking capabilities. While present on the device, EssentialModule could be tracking users' browsing activities and transmitting their browsing history, search history and clicked URLs to its operators. Many PUPs do not stop there. They also exfiltrate device details (IP address, geolocation, device type, browser type, etc.) or even sensitive information extracted from browsers' autofill data (account credentials, banking details and payment information).
