Threat Database Mac Malware EfficiencyInternet

EfficiencyInternet

After analyzing the EfficiencyInternet application, cybersecurity researchers confirmed that it is another intrusive addition to the AdLoad adware family. As such, EfficiencyInternet displays most of the distinguishing characteristics associated with this family. It is mainly focused on Mac users and acts as adware when activated on their devices.

The main consequence of having adware applications present on your computer or device is going to be the sudden appearance of various, unwanted and annoying advertisements. The advertisements could potentially be injected into unrelated websites to appear more legitimate. They also may take the form of pop-ups, banners, in-text links and more.

Users should be careful when dealing with advertisements generated by unfamiliar or unknown sources. The advertisements could be used as a way to promote unsafe destinations, such as phishing portals, fake giveaways or shady adult-oriented dating/betting websites. Users also may encounter advertisements for seemingly useful applications that turn out to be PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) carrying adware, browser hijacker or data-tracking functionalities. Indeed, adware applications are often equipped with the ability to track users' browsing activities and/or device details. In some cases, the PUP could even try to access sensitive payment or account details that have been extracted from the autofill data of the user's browser.
