DigitGuild

DigitGuild is another intrusive adware application that targets Mac users. In addition, after analyzing it, infosec researchers confirmed that the application belongs to the prolific AdLoad adware family. Most adware, browser hijackers, and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) do not possess any useful qualities and, as such, it is extremely unlikely to be installed by users willingly. Instead, their operators employ various questionable methods in an attempt to hide the installation of the app from the user's attention. Two of the most commonly encountered tactics are software bundles and fake installers/updates.

Adware applications such as DigitGuild are primarily focused on monetizing their presence on the device via the delivery of unwanted advertisements. The advertisements may take different forms - pop-up windows, banners, in-text links, etc., and rarely promote legitimate series, services or products. In most cases, users will be shown dubious advertisements for hoax pages, phishing portals, shady online betting/gaming platforms, more PUPs disguised as seemingly real applications, etc. Users also should keep in mind that interacting with the generated advertisements could trigger forced redirects that may lead to other, equally suspicious destinations.

PUPs may carry other intrusive functionalities with one of the most frequent being data collection. While installed on the device, the application may spy on the user's browsing activities, harvest device details, or even try to extract sensitive information from browsers' autofill data. This feature is often used as a convenient way to save account credentials, banking information, payment details, credit/debit card, numbers, etc. If such information becomes compromised, the consequences for the affected users could be significant.
