Threat Database Adware DefaultProducts

DefaultProducts

DefaultProducts advertises itself as a useful tool that can bring added convenience to the way Mac users surf the Web. The application could supposedly deliver faster and more accurate search results. However, the truth is that DefaultProducts is an adware-type program and its core functionality includes running an intrusive advertising campaign on the systems it is installed on. The application is mostly being distributed through deceptive marketing methods such as bundling, justifying its classification as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program), as well.

Affected users will quickly notice the impact of having DefaultProducts present on the device. The application will generate various unwanted advertisements leading to a severely diminished user experience. The advertisements could take numerous forms - pop-ups, banners, in-text links, coupons, etc. They could even start to overlay any legitimate content displayed in the browser.

Apart from the sheer annoyance it can cause, DefaultProducts also could try to spy on the browsing activities of the user. This is a common behavior observed in most applications of this type. They try to obtain the browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, and even device details such as the IP address and geolocation. The acquired data will be uploaded to a remote server where the operators of the PUP could decide to either exploit it themselves or offer it to interested third parties.
