Threat Database Adware DefaultFabricOptic

DefaultFabricOptic

DefaultFabricOptic is an intrusive application that relies heavily on questionable distribution tactics to either trick users into installing it or mask the fact of its installation on their Mac devices. Some of the most commonly encountered methods employed by these PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are shady software bundles or outright fake installers for popular software products.

Instead of trying to benefit its users in any meaningful way, DefaultFabricOptic's main task is to monetize its presence. It does so by running an intrusive and annoying advertising campaign that will see the affected Mac device flooded with untrustworthy advertisements. Indeed, users should exercise caution when interacting with the presented advertisements. Clicking on them could trigger unwanted redirects to more hoax pages, fake giveaways, various phishing schemes, suspicious adult sites, etc. The advertisements also could be used to promote or spread additional dubious applications disguised as legitimate and useful software tools.

Some PUPs may even combine this adware functionality with that of a browser hijacker. They could modify important browser settings and then prevent users from reverting them. Settings such as the browser's homepage, new tab page, default search engine, and more, could be set to open a promoted page. PUPs also are known for possessing data-tracking functionality. While the invasive application is present on the system, it may be harvesting various browsing information, device details, and even confidential or sensitive data that has been saved as autofill data in the affected browsers.
