Threat Database Ransomware Datalock Ransomware

Datalock Ransomware

The Datalock Ransomware is a new threat that can target individual users but appears to be geared towards corporate entities. The malware operates as typical ransomware and incorporates several of the current trends observed in these types of threats. It should be noted that the Datalock Ransomware is not a wholly unique threat, as it is a variant belonging to the MedusaLocker family.

If the Datalock Ransomware is capable of breaching a computer, it will engage a powerful encryption algorithm that will render most of the files stored there both inaccessible and unusable. Each encrypted file will have '.datalock' attached to its original name as a new file extension. Afterward, the malware will drop its ransom note as files named 'Recovery_Instructions.html' that will places inside every folder contained locked data.

The hackers state that Datalock Ransopmware employs a combination of AES and RSA algorithms in its encryption routine. According to the note, the only method to recover their files is for the victims to meet the demands of the cybercriminals and pay a ransom in exchange for the decryption key and software. The hackers claim to have stolen data from the infected computers before the encryption process was engaged. The exfiltrated information is stored on a remote server and will be either sold to third parties or made available publicly. This is just another method to further pressure the victim into paying the ransom. Although the note doesn't mention the exact size of the ransom, it does warn that after 72 hours, the price will increase.

For further details, users should go to a dedicated website that is accessible only through the Tor browser. As a secondary option, two email addresses are provided - 'diniaminius@winrof.com' and 'soterissylla@wyseil.com.' Up to 3 files can be attached to the messages and will supposedly be decrypted for free.
