Darker Page Adware

The Darker Page is a Google Chrome browser extension that attempts to convince users to install it on their computers by promising to allow them to enable the dark mode on websites that usually do not support such functionality. While for some this could indeed be an enticing feature, it must be pointed out that it is just a part of the overall actions taken by the Darker Page application. Indeed, it appears that the creators of the program were far more interested in equipping it with intrusive capabilities that allow the Darker Page to inject advertisements into the sites visited by users. Furthermore, the application has also been observed to cause unwanted redirects.

This means that the Darker Page is considered as adware and possibly a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) by the cybersecurity community. Adware applications are generally tasked with generating monetary gains for their operators by running annoying ad campaigns. Indeed, the user experience on devices affected by such applications can suffer greatly due to the sheer number of unwanted and dubious advertisements produced by the invasive PUPs. Users can be presented with deceptive advertisements for hoax websites or suspicious adult-oriented platforms. They also can see seemingly enticing offers for additional applications that also turn out to be PUPs.

Another potentially unsafe characteristic of most PUPs is their ability to spy on the browsing activities carried on the system. The applications may be specifically harvesting and transmitting the user's browsing history, search history and clicked URLs. Numerous device details or autofill information harvested from the installed browsers also could be packaged and uploaded to a remote server controlled by the PUP's operators.
