CVLocker Ransomware

By GoldSparrow in Ransomware

The CVLocker Ransomware is a Trojan that is designed to scare computer users into believing that their machines are infected severely. The CVLocker Ransomware does not encrypt its victims' files or carry out any operation on the infected computer that would harm the victim's files or force the victim to pay the ransom. The CVLocker Ransomware relies on scaring inexperienced computer users entirely by resembling established ransomware Trojans to make the victim believe that the files on the infected computer have been encrypted. The CVLocker Ransomware seems to be designed in part as a mean-spirited joke, due to the nature of the message it displays on the victim's computer. However, the only thing the CVLocker Ransomware does on an affected computer is to display its 'ransom' note, a message designed to scare computer users.

Which Ransomware Trojans the CVLocker Ransomware is Emulating

Encryption ransomware Trojans are real threats that claim countless victims every day. They have been in the news recently because of large-scale attacks such as the WannaCry outbreaks and infections on healthcare providers and government offices. Threats like the CVLocker Ransomware try to take advantage of the awareness of the existence of these threats to trick computer users into paying ransoms when there's nothing wrong with their files.

What Lies Behind the Threats Made by the CVLocker Ransomware

The CVLocker Ransomware is not a legitimate ransomware Trojan. It seems that the CVLocker Ransomware carries out a joke designed to take money from scared computer users. The CVLocker Ransomware locks the victim's screen and claims that the victim's files have been encrypted. The CVLocker Ransomware also claims that the victim's files will be deleted. Neither of these 'facts' is true; the CVLocker Ransomware does not have the capacity to encrypt or delete files, and its attack is limited to displaying a pop-up window containing a threatening message. This window accuses the victim of silly 'infractions' that barely make sense and then includes a countdown timer claiming that the victim's files will be deleted when the timer reaches zero. Many computer users, aware of ransomware attacks, may not be willing to double check the CVLocker Ransomware's claims and may simply believe the message and follow its instructions. The message the CVLocker Ransomware displays on an affected computer reads:

'CVLocker
oops, your files are encrypted.
why you ask? well, you been have found doing the following:
– Watching MLG Montage Parodies
– Expanding Dong
– Creating Bonzi Buddy
Time left untill your files are deleted:
60
To decrypt your files, send an email to fuck-off-from-my-p…'

Note that the CVLocker Ransomware message does not include a ransom amount or even clear instructions on how to pay it. The CVLocker Ransomware is an unfinished, poor joke that will not carry out any legitimate attack on its victims clearly.

Dealing with the CVLocker Ransomware and Similar Infections

Although it may be very difficult to deal with real ransomware Trojans (since the encrypted files are rarely recoverable), dealing with bogus ransomware like the CVLocker Ransomware is quite simple. PC security researchers advise removing the CVLocker Ransomware Trojan from the infected computer using a reliable security program that is fully up-to-date. Since the CVLocker Ransomware will display a full-screen message that prevents computer users from accessing their computers, it will be necessary to bypass the CVLocker Ransomware when starting up the infected computer. Computer users are advised to start up Windows using Safe Mode, which will prevent the CVLocker Ransomware from starting up automatically when the victim logs into Windows. Once the affected computer can be accessed, a security program will be capable of removing the CVLocker Ransomware. Exercising caution when handling emails and browsing the Web can prevent future infections. In the case of a real ransomware attack, computer users are advised to keep updated backups of their files regularly.
