Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus – A Variant of the Ukash Virus Targeting Spanish Citizens

The Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus is one of many variants of Ukash Virus. This malware infection is designed to harass its victim and to take the victim's computer hostage until a ransom is paid. The year 2011 saw a rise in the number of attacks corresponding to variants of Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus. According to ESG security researchers, this may be related to news that this malware infection is used as part of an affiliate plan in which criminals behind variants of Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus pay hackers for infecting as many computer systems as possible with variants of this winlocker. According to ESG security researchers, Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus' message is not connected anyhow to the Spanish National Police. Rather, Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus is part of a scam that is targeted at specific countries in the European Union. There are various versions of Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus, each targeting a different country. Depending on the targeted country, the Ukash virus variant will mention one of that country's law enforcement agency, display that agency's shields or emblems and display its malicious message in the targeted country's language. ESG security researchers have detected versions of Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus in German, Spanish, English, Dutch, Russian, Italian and French.

Do Not Become a Victim of the Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus Scam

The message that Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus displays claims that the victim's computer was used in illegal activities, including bestiality and child pornography. Logic would say that such grave crimes would not be punishable with a one hundred Euro fine. However, this is the amount that Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus claims as a fine for these criminal charges. The Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus indicates that the user should send the money through the Ukash money transfer service (from which the Ukash virus derives its nickname). The message goes on to claim that, if the victim does not pay the fine, the infected computer's hard drive will be deleted and its contents forwarded to the Spanish National Police. However, there is no need to worry about this happening. According to ESG malware analysts, Cuerpo Nacional de Policia Virus does not have the capacity to delete your files or send information to a remote party. This malware's function is limited to freezing your computer and preventing you from accessing your desktop.
