Threat Database Adware ContentStyles

ContentStyles

ContentStyles is an intrusive application, designed to deliver unwanted advertisements to the Mac devices it is present on. Naturally, users would be extremely disinclined to download and install such an application willingly, and the operators of ContentStyles know this fact very well. That is why they present their software product as a convenient tool that can improve users' browsing experience.

However, more importantly, ContentStyles is being proliferated via deceptive means that mask the fact that the application is being installed on the system. Applications that rely on such misleading tactics heavily are classified as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Users also have to be wary of the advertisements delivered by such applications. It is best to avoid engaging with the various pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text links, etc., generated by PUPs, as they could lead to suspicious or outright unsafe websites. Users could be taken to sites conducting online tactics, phishing pages, portals spreading more PUPs, or even compromised sites trying to deliver malware threats.

PUPs typically possess another nasty functionality - they can collect the user's data. In most cases, the target information includes various details about the user's browsing habits, such as clicked links, visited pages and conducted searches. Device details including the IP address, ISP (Internet Service Provider), and geolocation also might be harvested.

However, ContentStyles digs even deeper. Evidence shows that this PUP attempts to collect information that has been saved into the affected browser. This could include personal details, such as account credentials, phone numbers, and even banking and debit/credit card details.
