ChannelParameter

The dubious application named ChannelParameter is designed specifically to generate monetary gains for its operators via intrusive means. It targets Mac users only and once inside the computer it can act as both adware and a browser hijacker. In addition, many users may not even notice that such an intruder application is being delivered to their Macs. Indeed, these deceptive applications classified as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are spread predominantly via questionable distribution techniques including bundling and fake installers.

Adware is responsible for generating annoying and unwanted advertisements. The advertisements could severely impact the browsing experience on the device. However, more importantly, they can redirect users to suspicious or outright compromised websites via forced redirects. Users could land on online scams, phishing pages, fake giveaways, etc.

ChannelParameter also will generate artificial traffic towards a promoted address. It does so through browser hijacker functionality that allows the app to establish control over the user's web browsers. Typically, the affected settings will include the homepage, new tab page, the default search engine or a combination of the three. As for the promoted address, in the vast majority of cases, it will belong to a fake search engine that is incapable of producing results by itself.

PUPs have another nefarious aspect that must be taken into account. These applications are infamous for spying on the user's browsing activities In addition, the application also might harvest various device details (IP address, geolocation, ISP, browser type and more) and transmit them to their operators.
