Threat Database Spam 'Bitcoin Blackmail' Email

'Bitcoin Blackmail' Email

The 'Bitcoin Blackmail' email is a scheme propagated through the dissemination of numerous spam emails. The text of the emails that are part of this unsafe campaign follows the exact points associated with a frequently used online scheme known as 'sextortion.' Users should remember to keep calm and not act hastily, no matter how serious the claims found in the misleading emails may seem.

Depending on the specific version of the scheme emails, the messages that the recipients receive could vary slightly. The main differences can be found in the amount that the fraudsters are trying to extort from their victims and the specific crypto-wallet address to which the money is supposed to be transferred. Otherwise, the emails will all claim that the user's computer has been infected with threatening malware, such as a Trojan or a RAT (Remote Access Trojan). The fraudsters will state that they have managed to assume control of the computer and any connected cameras or microphones.

Next, users will be told that they have been recorded while watching age-restricted content. This non-existent clip will supposedly be sent to all of the victim's contacts, unless they pay an exorbitant amount of money to the con artists. The demanded sums may range from $1900 to over $7000. As the name suggests, the 'Bitcoin Blackmail' Email operators state that they would only accept payments made using the Bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Users have no reason to believe the fabricated claims of the 'Bitcoin Blackmail' emails. The best course of action is to ignore the fraudulent messages entirely, block the sender, and move on. Of course, having a reputable security solution protecting your computer is strongly recommended to avoid any malware infections and enduring security or privacy issues.
