Threat Database Adware ApplicationEvents

ApplicationEvents

ApplicationEvents describes itself as a convenient tool that can improve the way users navigate the Web. The application is supposed to enhance the browsing experience by delivering faster and more accurate search results. However, after being installed, ApplicationEvents quickly reveals its true face - yet another adware that targets Mac users. It should be noted that programs such as ApplicationEvents are rarely downloaded and installed by users intentionally. A far more likely scenario is that the app sneaked itself onto the Mac system via deceptive techniques such as bundling or being placed inside fake software updaters/installers. The reliance on such dubious distribution methods also classifies Application Events as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

The core functionality of ApplicationEvents is to deliver unwanted advertisements to the devices it is present on. The advertisements could take numerous different forms including pop-ups, banners, in-text links and more. Various clickbait messages or enticing proposals could try to bait users into engaging with the ads. Users should avoid doing so at all costs because the advertisements could take them to questionable or outright unsafe third-party websites. Domains promoting additional PUPs, phishing pages siphoning all entered information, scam giveaways, and more could all be among the destinations of the forced redirects.

ApplicationEvents itself also might try to obtain specific user information, behavior that is often associated with PUPs. In the majority of cases, the collected information will include the entire search history, all visited websites, and every clicked URL. Device details such as the IP address, geolocation and ISP also could be harvested.
