AlphaExplorer

Operators of dubious applications are still relying on the infamous AdLoad adware family as a way to easily create more PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). One such example is the AlphaExplorer application, which was discovered by cybersecurity researchers. Typically, applications of this type are distributed through various, questionable methods, including deceptive websites, shady software bundles or outright fake installers/updates.

Once AlphaExplorer has been deployed on the user's Mac, it is likely to activate its adware capabilities. As a result, users could start seeing a far greater number of advertisements than normal while browsing. The advertisements could appear as pop-ups, notifications, banners and more. One of the main risks involved with adware applications is that the advertisements they generate could promote additional, untrustworthy destinations or platforms. Users risk seeing advertisements for phishing or technical support schemes, fake giveaways, shady betting/gaming platforms, etc.

PUPs also are notorious for spying on users' browsing activities. The intrusive applications may collect information from the browsing and search histories, capture numerous device details (IP address, geolocation, device type), and sometimes even attempt to extract sensitive data from the browsers' autofill data (banking details, payment information, account credentials, etc.)
