0fficial.info

The 0fficial.info site is another page trying to push barely working or non-functional PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) to Mac users. It relies on the same scare tactics found on most deceiving websites of this type. Users who land on 0fficial.info will be presented with a pop-up window claiming that their Mac devices have been damaged by four unspecified malware threats. To avoid any permanent damage, visitors are then directed towards clicking the 'Download' button and installing the promoted 'Cleanup my Mac' application.

Now, let's start with the fact that no website can perform a malware scan on its own. This is just an obvious ploy that preys on less tech-savvy users. Not to mention that even if the promoted applications were legitimate, users should still download them from an official application store and not through a suspicious random website that told them to do so.

PUPs rely on such underhanded tactics to spread themselves, as users are extremely unlikely to download and install them willingly. While, in general, PUPs are not considered a direct threat to the computer, they can deliver intrusive advertisements, modify the settings of the user's Web browser to open a fake search engine and establish a spying routine that can gather browsing-related information.
