Threat Database Ransomware Zzla Ransomware

Zzla Ransomware

Zzla is yet another potent ransomware that has been spawned from the extremely prolific STOP/Djvu malware family. Although new variants are being discovered by the infosec community almost daily, the STOP/Djvu threats are still retaining their destructive potential, and Zzla is not an exception. The ransomware is capable of locking users out from their own files. It achieves this via an encryption routine that employs an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm. Nearly all popular filetypes are targeted - databases, archives, photos, images, videos, documents, PDFs, will be rendered inaccessible and unusable. Each encrypted file will have '.zzla' appended to its original name as a new extension. Afterward, the thread will drop its ransom note inside text files named '_readme.txt.' One ransom-bearing file will be generated in every folder containing encrypted data.

Zzla lists the same instructions found in all STOP/Djvu variants. The hackers extort their victims for exactly $980. In exchange, they promise to provide the affected users with the decryption key and tool necessary to unlock the data. The usual offer to slash the price of the ransom in half to $490 is also here. The only listed requirement is for the victims to have initiated contact within the first 72 hours following the Zzla Ransomware infection. Two emails are provided as communication channels - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'helpmanager@airmail.cc.' A single encrypted file can be attached to the message. The hackers would then supposedly decrypt it and return it unlocked to the user.
