Zate Ransomware

The Zate Ransomware is a threatening tool used by threat actors to encrypt the data of their victims. Encrypted files will no longer be accessible or usable. Each affected file will have '.zate' appended to its original name. A ransom note will be delivered to the infected devices as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

The behavior and underlying code of the Zate Ransomware confirm that the threat is a variant of the STOP/Djvu malware family. This threatening strain has been popular among cybercriminals, due to the ease with which new variants could be developed and unleashed. Victims also should be warned that the operators of STOP/Djvu threats have been observed to deploy additional malware to the breached systems. Mostly, those have been info-stealers, such as the Vidar Stealer or the RedLine Stealer.

As for the instructions delivered in the ransom note, Zate follows the typical STOP/Djvu pattern. The threat warns victims that to recover their data, they will need to pay a ransom of $980. The hackers 'promise' to then send a decryptor tool and the necessary decryption keys. Victims who contact the cybercriminals within the first 72 hours are told that they will receive a 50% discount on the price of the ransom. The two email addresses that victims can use for communication with the hackers are 'support@fishmail.top' and 'datarestorehelp@airmail.cc.'
