Threat Database Ransomware Zaqi Ransomware

Zaqi Ransomware

The popularity of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family among certain cybercriminal circles is not waning and more and more variants are being released into the wild. The cybersecurity community continues to be vigilant and is keeping an eye out for such new threats. One of the latest to be identified is Zaqi Ransomware. Although the variant fails to exhibit any meaningful improvements over the rest of the threats from the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family, it still possesses significant destructive potential. Other threats that have been used in recent attacks include Night Sky, NUNCATARDE and Dehd.

If deployed on the targeted computer successfully Zaqi will engage an encryption process utilizing an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm. As a result, victims will no longer be able to access the majority of their data stored on the infected device. Documents, PDFs, databases, archived, audio, video, image files, etc., will no longer be usable. Each encrypted file will have its name modified via the addition of '.zaqi' as a new file extension. Finally, a ransom note will be dropped on the device as a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Overview

The ransom-demanding message of Zaqi is completely identical to the ones found in other STOP/Djvu threats. The demanded ransom is set at $980 but the attackers offer to decrease it by 50% to $490. Apparently, the only requirement is for victims to contact the cybercriminals at any point during the first 72 hours following the ransomware infection. To communicate with the hackers, victims are left with two email addresses - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'helprestoremanager@airmail.cc.'

According to Zaqi's instructions, users also can attach a single encrypted file to their message. The file will supposedly be unlocked and returned for free as a demonstration of the hackers' ability to restore the victim's data. Keep in mind that if the file contains important information, it will not be decrypted.
