Wiot Ransomware

Another variant belonging to the extremely prolific STOP/Djvu Ransomware family has been detected in the wild. Named the Wiot Ransomware, the threat is largely consistent with the other variants of this family without demonstrating any meaningful modifications or improvements. However, users shouldn't underestimate the threat, as it is still incredibly threatening, and can lock a large number of file types, rendering them inaccessible and unusable m completely.

The most distinguishing feature of this variant is the file extension it uses to mark each encrypted file - '.wiot.' When all targeted files have been locked, the Wiot Ransomware will drop a ransom note on the compromised system. The ransom-bearing message will be contained inside a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Details

The instructions left by the Wiot Ransomware have all the same stipulations usually found in the STOP/Djvu variants. Victims are told that they will have to pay the sum of $980 to receive the decryption key and tool required for the restoration of the encrypted data. However, if they establish contact with the cybercriminals within 72-hours, the amount of the ransom will supposedly be slashed in half to $490. The note also mentions that a single locked file can be sent to be decrypted for free. Victims are left with two email addresses that they can use as communication channels - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'managerhelper@airmail.cc.'
