Windows-safe.com is an untrustworthy website that appears to have been created with the sole purpose of delivering questionable content and running online tactics. The exact behavior of the page could change, depending on certain factors, such as the IP address and geolocation of the visitor. This means that users landing on the page may be presented with different tactic variants.
One of the confirmed possibilities is a version of the scheme known as 'You’ve visited illegal infected website.' It involves showing users several completely fake security alerts that are being presented as coming from a reputable source, such as McAfee. Of course, the company has zero connection to the dubious page and its name is used solely for its brand recognition. Users also will be urged to start a scan for threats by clicking the presented 'Scan' button. This is a common tactic, but users should remember that no website can perform such a function. Indeed, all results presented as being generated by the supposed 'scan' are completely fabricated.
Typically, the goal of the hoax page is to scare users into downloading and installing a promoted application presented as a reliable security solution. However, when deployed on the system, these applications usually turn out to be intrusive adware, browser hijackers or other types of PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). Another possibility is for the fraudsters to try and earn illegitimate commission fees by instructing their victims to buy a subscription for a real software product.
