Weui Ransomware
The STOP/DJVU family of ransomware threats has remained a popular choice among cybercriminals, with the variants based on the family being uncovered almost daily. One of the latest is named Weui Ransomware. Although it is just a variant without any significant improvements or deviations from a typical STOP/DJVU threat, Weui Ransomware is still an extremely threatening malware.
The consequences of a Weui Ransomware attack could be devastating as the threat can lock out users from their own computer systems completely. It uses uncrackable cryptographic algorithms to encrypt all private or work-related files on the compromised device, avoiding only those files that could crash the system if tampered with. All files encrypted by Weui Ransomware will have '.weui' attached to their original filenames as a new extension. The threat's ransom note is delivered as a text file named '_readme.txt.' A copy of the file will be placed in every folder containing encrypted data.
Victims of Weui Ransomware are told that they will have to pay the sum of $980 to the cybercriminals to receive the decryption key and tool required for the restoration of the locked files. Affected users are further pushed into initiating contact through the hackers' offer to slash the price in half to $490 if they receive a message within the first 72 hours following the ransomware infection. For that purpose, victims are told to use either the primary email address at 'helpmanager@mail.ch' or the reserve one at 'restoremanager@airmail.cc.' An isolated file can be attached to the email message to be decrypted for free.
