The Weekly Stock Loader is a browser extension that tries to attract users with the ability to provide them with weekly updates on their favorite stocks. It is marketed as a helpful tool for investors, but analysis of the application has revealed that it is actually adware. Adware is malicious software designed to display intrusive advertisements and redirect users to sponsored websites. In the case of the Weekly Stock Loader, it was found to be displaying pop-up advertisements and redirecting users to sites that contain Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs).
Adware is a category of invasive software that is designed to display intrusive advertisements on the websites and/or interfaces visited by users. These adverts can promote a range of tactics, such as phishing, technical support, etc., untrustworthy/harmful software, such as adware and browser hijackers, as well as malware like Trojans and ransomware. In some cases, the advertisements can even be programmed to perform stealthy downloads and installations when clicked. Furthermore, any legitimate content promoted through these advertisements is likely to have been abused in affiliate programs for fraudulent commissions.
When certain conditions are not suitable, such as incompatible browser/system specs or user geolocation, adware like the Weekly Stock Loader might not deliver advertisements. However, even in such cases, the presence of this corrupted software on a system is still very threatening and can potentially result in severe security and privacy issues. It has been found to monitor the users’ browsing activities and collect sensitive data, including visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, user credentials, financial information and more. The collected information can then be sold to third parties or used in other hurtful ways.
Adware like the Weekly Stock Loader may pose a serious threat to the safety of devices and users by not only delivering intrusive advertisements but also collecting sensitive data without permission. This can lead to system infections, privacy violations, financial losses and even identity theft. Therefore, it is paramount to be aware of such threats and take steps to protect yourself and your devices.
