WebMusicSearch

The WebMusicSearch application tries to pass as a useful addition that could help users navigate the Web in a more convenient way. Unfortunately, in reality, the application turns out to be little more than a browser hijacker, whose only goal is to promote the address of a fake search engine.

Typically, users do not realize that applications such as WebMusicSearch are being delivered to their computers or devices. That is because these PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are distributed through deceitful tactics predominantly, such as bundling or fake installers/updates for popular products.

In WebMusicSearch's case, it promotes its own address - webmusicsearch.com, by setting it as the Web browser's homepage, new tab page and default search engine. This means that whenever the user launches the affected browser, starts a new tab, or begins a search via the URL tab, they would be taken to the sponsored address immediately.

Fake engines cannot produce any results on their own, as they are not equipped with the necessary functionality. To show some kind of results, they would either redirect to a legitimate engine or a dubious engine that could deliver results filled with third-party ad links. Webmusicsearch.com is capable of both - it can present results from Yahoo or redirect to the suspicious searchlee.com engine.

Most PUPs have another intrusive characteristic - they might spy on the user's browsing activities. Various information (browsing history, search history, IP address, geolocation) may be tracked, packaged, and transmitted to a remote server. The operators of the PUP can then decide on how to exploit the acquired data, including the option of potentially selling it to third parties.
