Threat Database Trojans Weather Zero

Weather Zero

The Weather Zero may enter users' computers and devices unnoticed and perform various intrusive actions. The application is likely a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) being spread through dubious websites, shady software bundles, or fake installers/updates claiming to be for legitimate programs. PUPs typically possess a range of unwanted functionalities, most commonly those associated with adware and browser hijackers.

As a result, users affected by the Weather Zero could begin seeing numerous, unwanted advertisements as part of an annoying advertising campaign. The advertisements may severely diminish the user experience on the device, but more importantly, they could be promoting untrustworthy destinations or software products. Users may see advertisements for hoax websites, fake giveaways, phishing portals, questionable online betting/gaming platforms, and more. Browser hijackers, on the hand, target the user's Web browsers and modify their homepage, new tab page and default search engine. The goal is to redirect the user to a promoted page, typically a fake search engine.

The problem with PUPs is that they often carry additional functionalities. While active on the device, these applications may spy on users' browsing activities (browsing history, search history), collect device details (IP address, geolocation, browser type, etc.), or even try to extract information from browsers' autofill data (account credentials, banking info, payment details). PUPs also may have vulnerabilities or bugs that could be exploited by cybercriminals as a gateway for serious malware threats.
