The Verasto Ransomware is a file cryptor Trojan that is a variant of the STOP Djvu Ransomware. The emerging Verasto Ransomware was recorded on April 23rd, 2019. Samples of the Verasto Ransomware suggest the malware authors have released version 70 of the STOP Djvu Ransomware. Executable recovered from compromised systems were found to include a filled out 'Version Number' field in the file details section that said 'v070.' Earlier variants include the Promos Ransomware that was listed as v060, and the Tronas Ransomware was listed as v065. The Verasto Ransomware feature no notable improvements other than the use of the '.verasto' extension and the usage of two new email accounts. Users are typically compromised via spam emails and macro-enabled Microsoft Word files. The Verasto Ransomware encrypts standard data formats and alters filenames to include the .verasto' extension. For example, 'Within Temptation - Ice Queen.mp3' is renamed to 'Within Temptation - Ice Queen.mp3.verasto.' The ransom note will be displayed on the desktop in the form of a simple text file named '_readme.txt' that reads:

You should clean the compromised machines using a respected anti-malware service and avoid paying money to the cybercriminals. The people behind the Verasto Ransomware and the related clones should not be trusted. You may be invited to pay a hefty ransom to a Bitcoin wallet address, and you may lose your money without receiving a decoder. PC security analysts alert the STOP Ransomware campaign is not showing signs of slowing down, and the payment of the ransom is never a good idea. It is recommended to boot data backups and ignore questionable emails.
