Threat Database Adware UptoDateMac

UptoDateMac

UptoDateMac is an application that is being classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and adware. It is designed to target Mac users predominantly, and it relies on dubious distribution techniques for its proliferation. Indeed, applications such as UptoDateMac are almost never downloaded and installed by users knowingly. Instead, they are either attached to the installation process of another more popular freeware application in a technique called 'bundling' or injected inside fake software installer/updates.

The main purpose of UptoDateMac is to run an intrusive advertising campaign on the Mac systems it has managed to infiltrate. The advertising materials may take forms of all kinds, including pop-ups, banners, surveys, coupons and more. At the same time, UptoDateMac also possesses browser hijacker capabilities and can assert a certain degree of control over the user's Web browser. By modifying the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine, UptoDateMac can begin generating artificial traffic towards a sponsored address.

Browser hijackers are a common tool for promoting fake search engines that instead of delivering adequate search results are more interested in obtaining private browsing information from the user. Although PUPs such as UptoDateMac are not considered a direct threat, they should still be removed as soon as possible.
