Users should be careful when dealing with the Updatenotification.xyz website. The page appears to be dedicated solely to the delivery of various online scams. For example, when infosec researchers analyzed the site, they discovered it running a variant of the 'McAfee - Your PC is infected with 5 viruses!' scam. However, what users encounter could be different based on their specific IP address and geolocation.
This particular scheme relies on fake scare tactics in an attempt to trick users into installing a promoted app or buying a subscription for one. To make its completely false claims about malware being present on users' devices seem legitimate, Updatenotification.xyz creates the impression that they are being issued by McAfee. The dubious page features the branding and design of the security vendor without McAfee having any connection to it. Furthermore, the scam page may try to convince users that it has scanned their device for threats and has found multiple malware lurking on it. This is an entirely made-up statement because no website is capable of such functionality on its own.
Typically, pages running this scam try to deliver various intrusive PUPs. After being installed on the device, these apps could activate adware, browser hijacker, or even data-tracking routines. Alternatively, the promoted app could be a real software product that the scammers are using as part of an affiliate scheme to earn illegitimate commission fees.
