Cybersecurity experts have classified UltraCouponSearch as a browser hijacker. This intrusive browser extension tries to convince users that it will provide them with a more convenient way to conduct Web searches, but when installed on the system, it assumes control over the Web browsers and causes unwanted redirects. In this particular case, UltraCouponSearch promotes the ultracouponsearch.com fake search engine.

Browser hijackers typically target the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings. By modifying these particular settings, the unwanted application ensures that users will be taken to the promoted Web address every time they start the Web browser, open a new tab, or conduct a search via the URL tab. More importantly, users should be careful with the results displayed by fake search engines. While sometimes the fake engine will simply show results taken from a legitimate source, such as Yahoo, Bing, or Google, there is no guarantee that this will be a consistent behavior. For example, ultracouponsearch.com has been confirmed to redirect to Yahoo, as well as to the dubious search engine nearbyme.io.

Users also should be aware that PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), adware, and browser hijackers may have additional intrusive functions. These applications are infamous for having data-tracking routines. While active on the system, the PUP may collect the user's browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, IP address, geolocation and more. Some PUPs have even been observed attempting to extract account credentials, banking details, and other sensitive information from Web browsers' autofill data.
