TronTizer is a PUP or Potentially Unwanted Program, that is responsible for a wide variety of unwanted symptoms on affected computers. A Throne that Instead of Royalty Means Trouble
There are many problems that have been associated with TronTizer. The main purpose of TronTizer is to make money at the expense of computer users by causing various symptoms on the affected Web browser. There are several ways in which TronTizer does this, including the following:
- TronTizer generates traffic for several low quality websites, including TronTizer's homepage itself. TronTizer does this by taking over the victim's Web browser and forcing it to visit these websites.
- TronTizer generates advertising revenue by displaying a wide variety of advertisements on the affected Web browser. Security researchers have noted that there are multiple types of advertisements that have been associated with TronTizer. Advertisements linked to TronTizer include pop-up advertisements, video advertisements, banner and sliding advertisements and in-text advertisements. These last types of advertisements consist in turning certain words in the text of an unrelated Web page into hyperlinks and then highlighting them by changing their color and underlining them. When the mouse passes over the highlighted word, a large intrusive advertisement is displayed on the victim's computer.
- TronTizer generates marketing revenue by gathering information about the affected computer. This data may be sold to marketers for marketing research or it may be used by TronTizer to deliver advertisements to the affected Web browser.
