Tomachopan.com is a deceptive website that exists for the purpose of conducting a popular browser-based tactic solely. Through the use of manipulative social-engineering tricks, users who land on the site are lured into clicking the 'Allow' button. This will subscribe them to the push notification services of Tomachopan.com. In practice, this means that the fraudulent website has received the browser permissions needed for it to begin delivering unwanted sponsored advertisements on the affected device.
Quite a few different scenarios are being employed by the countless websites carrying out this tactic, with the most popular, by far, been them pretending to conduct a captcha check for bots. Tomachopan.com, however, has chosen a different angle to exploit. It plays on people's curiosity by displaying a loading or a buffering bar accompanied with the following message:
'Click the «Allow» button to subscribe to the push notifications and continue watching.'
While the actions of Tomachopan.com can hardly be described as anything more than being annoying, the same cannot be said for the advertisements it generates. Users that choose to click on them could be redirected to suspicious or even compromised third-party websites. They can then be subjected to landing pages for tech support tactics, misleading offers for various PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), and malware threats hidden inside fake software updates or installers.
