Tcbu Ransomware

The Tcbu Ransomware targets the data of its victims and renders it unusable. Threats of this type are typically equipped with an uncrackable encryption process that will lock the data found on the breached devices. File types, such as documents, archives, audio and video files, databases and more will become inaccessible. The impacted files will then be used to extort money from affected individual users or organizations.

The Tcbu Ransomware threat has been confirmed to be a variant belonging to the STOP/Djvu malware family. Variants of this threatening strain are still being developed and unleashed by cybercriminals. Once the Tcbu Ransomware has been activated and starts encrypting files, it also will change the original names of those files. More specifically, victims will notice the addition of '.tcbu' to the file names as a new extension. A ransom note will be dropped on the system as a file named '_readme.txt.' The message from the attackers states that they demand to be paid a ransom of $980. However, if victims contact them via the provided email addresses ('support@fishmail.top' and 'datarestorehelp@airmail.cc') within the first 72 hours, the size of the ransom will supposedly be cut in half to $490.
