Threat Database Adware TabOptimizer

TabOptimizer

TabOptimizer is classified as an adware app that is presented to the users in the guise of a useful tool for managing browser tabs. The app claims that it will improve browser performance by eliminating errors. The true purpose of the TabOptimizer, however, is to monetize its presence by abusing the permissions granted to it by the user to run an intrusive advertising campaign, leading to a severely diminished user experience on the affected device.

The unwanted advertising materials could take various forms - pop-ups, banners, surveys, etc. The legitimate content viewed by the user may even get partially covered by the ads. While this aspect of TabOptimizer's activity can hardly be described as anything more than an annoyance, users should keep in mind that clicking on any of the displayed ads could take them to dubious third-party websites. It is not uncommon for the redirects to lead to pages dedicated to phishing or tech support scams, the propagation of additional PUPs, or even malware threats masquerading as seemingly urgent software updates.

Another red flag associated with TabOptimizer is its data-tracking capabilities. The app will monitor the user's browsing habits, log them, and then send the collected data to its creators. Among the gathered information could be the browsing and search histories, IP address and geolocation of the device, ISP (Internet Service Provider), and more.
