SocialCouponSearch is an intrusive application classified as a browser hijacker. Its sole reason for existing is to drive artificial traffic towards a promoted address. In this case, it takes users to socialcouponsearch.com. To achieve its goal, the browser hijacker takes control over the installed Web browsers and modifies their settings. More specifically, SocialCouponSearch will affect the browser's homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. The application may even establish persistence mechanisms, ensuring its continual presence on the system.
Users should keep in mind that applications such as SocialCouponSearch also are considered to be PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) due to the deceitful methods involved in their distribution. Indeed, PUPs are predominantly spread via a scheme known as bundling or through fake software installers.
As we said, socialcouponsearch.com is a fake search engine, meaning that it cannot produce any result on its own. When users initiate a search, they will be redirected to another engine. In some cases, it may be a legitimate one, such as Yahoo while others may be taken to nearbyme.io. While nearbyme.io can generate results, they are of low quality, inaccurate, and can be filled with numerous sponsored ad links.
It is strongly recommended to remove all PUPs from your computer or device as soon as possible. These applications are notorious for possessing data-tracking capabilities. The gathered information may include various device details (IP address, geolocation, browser type, etc.), the entire browsing history, every clicked link and each initiated search.
