Sick Ransomware

A new ransomware threat has been caught by infosec researchers. Named Sick Ransomware, the threat can prevent users from accessing their files stored on the compromised system. Sick Ransomware achieves this by encrypting the data with a strong cryptographic algorithm that is virtually uncrackable. Each encrypted file will have '.sick' appended to its name as a new extension. Afterward, Sick Ransomware will proceed to drop its ransom note on the user's desktop in the form of a text file named 'HELP.txt.'

Usually, the ransom notes delivered by ransomware threats contain various details about the money demanded by the hackers, how to pay the ransom, and ways to reach the cybercriminals. Sick Ransomware, however, has all this information published on a dedicated website while the ransom note created on each infected machine consists simply a link to that site.

Apparently, the hackers responsible for unleashing Sick Ransomware want to receive $100 payable using the Bitcoin cryptocurrency if they are to send the required decryption key and tool to their victims. Affected users should provide their email addresses in the description of the transaction. The hackers set a time limit of 224-hours after which the decryption key will supposedly be deleted from the server rendering the locked files unsalvageable.

It is not recommended to send any amount of money or, if possible, to avoid engaging in any discussions with people carrying out malware attacks. Instead, use a professional anti-malware solution to clean the infected computer and then look for a suitable backup from which to restore the encrypted files.
