Shield-fordesktop.com is a deceptive website designed to act as a platform for the propagation of various online tactics. The exact scheme that users encounter on the page could be determined by their IP address, geolocation, and other factors. When the page was examined by infosec experts, they confirmed three distinct schemes. Shield-fordesktop.com was seen presenting users with an article on a promoted Android OS application, offering them a 'Security Checkup,' under the false pretense that their devices are at serious risk, and running a variation of the 'Your Chrome Is Severely Damaged By 13 Malware!' tactic.
In most cases, rogue websites, such as Shield-fordesktop.com, want to trick or scare users into downloading and installing a promoted dubious application. When deployed on the devices, these applications often turn out to be thinly-veiled adware, browser hijackers or other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). The alternative is for the hoax website to try and earn illegitimate commission fees by luring users into buying a subscription for an actual software product. In these cases, it is important to remember that the developers and publishers of the offered product have no connection to the deceptive website.
