The Search Secretly program by Visicom Media Inc. is published as a free-to-use browser extension that you can add to Google Chrome. The Search Secretly browser extension is advertised to help users search anonymously without being tracked by companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. When you install the Search Secretly browser extension, it adds an icon to your toolset in the top right corner of the browser and asks for several permissions that include:
- Read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
- Communicate with cooperating websites.
- Change your search settings to: searchsecretly.net.
- Communicate with cooperating native applications.
When you click on the icon of Search Secretly, you are presented with a pop-up window that features a text box and allows you to initiate a search with Yahoo and Google. As stated above and at searchsecretly.net, the Search Secretly extension is centered around the idea to provide users with an untraceable search. When you enter your search terms in the Search Secretly pop-up and choose Google/Yahoo, the extension opens an incognito browsing window that loads results on Google/Yahoo. The Search Secretly pop-up window includes a link to the settings panel and opens the 'Clear browsing data' dialog, which you can use to erase information like your Internet history, download history, cookies, passwords, auto-fill form data, hosted app data and media licenses.
The Search Secretly claims to offer a secure connection and a private connection to Google and Yahoo, but Visicom Media Inc. claims credit for services provided by Google and Yahoo for free. Web browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, SRWare Iron, SeaMonkey, and others connect to Google and Yahoo via SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) automatically, which is a technology that Visicom Media Inc. does not hold the patent to. Search Secretly does not protect your search operation and your privacy simply by giving you the option to delete your surfing data and opening the incognito browsing mode of your Internet client. Visicom Media Inc. promotes the Search Secretly using misleading information, and searchsecretly.net is found to send the search terms to Yahoo regardless of you using the Search Secretly pop-up window.
Search Secretly is deemed as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that is associated with questionable marketing practices and fails to protect your privacy. If you need an extension that loads the incognito browsing mode of your Internet client, then Search Secretly may be what you need. Search Secretly behaves like the Searchprivacy.co add-on and BrowserAir. Search Secretly is not classified as a security solution of any sort and you may want to remove it by navigating to Settings > More Tools > Extensions. You may need a reliable anti-spyware tool to erase the cookies downloaded by Search Secretly in the background.
