The searchmime.com address belongs to a fake search engine that is being promoted via a browser hijacker application. These intrusive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) employ numerous questionable tactics in their distribution to install themselves without being noticed. The most popular method by far is known as bundling - the intruder application is added as a preselected choice in the installation settings of another more desirable software product.
Typically, browser hijackers take over the user's Web browsers and modify the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. However, the PUP promoting searchmime.com affects the default search engine setting only. As such, every time users conduct a search query via the browser's URL bar, they will be redirected to the promoted address.
Fake engines cannot produce results on their own, and searchmime.com is not an exception. It can either take the user's search through a legitimate engine (Yahoo) or redirect to a dubious one (nearbyme.io). Dubious engines can deliver low-quality results that will most likely be filled with various sponsored advertisements.
While present on the system, most PUPs also will run data-harvesting routines. They may collect the entire browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, IP addresses, geolocation and more. All acquired data will then be transmitted to a remote server. The operators of the specific PUP can then exploit the user's information in a variety of ways, including potentially selling it to interested third parties.
