SearchHDConverter is a browser extension that is being promoted and distributed through deceptive websites and other underhanded means. The reliance on such questionable methods classifies SearchHDConverter as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Furthermore, no matter what features and functionalities the application may claim to have, its main goal is to take over users' Web browsers and cause unwanted redirects. Indeed, SearchHDConverter is another invasive browser hijacker.
Web browsers affected by the application will have their current homepage, new tab page, and default search engine substituted with the searchhdconverter.com address. As is typically the case when browser hijackers are involved, the promoted page belongs to a fake search engine. In this case, the searches redirected to searchhdconverter.com will be further rerouted to the legitimate search.yahoo.com engine or the dubious one at nearbyme.io. Which one will users get, is likely determined based on factors, such as their specific browser type, IP address, geolocation, and possibly more.
While installed on the device, PUPs could be silently spying on the user's browsing activities. Information, such as the entire browsing history, search history, and clicked URLs could be packaged alongside numerous device details and exfiltrated to a remote server, under the control of the PUP's operators. Users also should keep in mind that some PUPs can even extract autofill data from the affected browsers. In these cases, sensitive details, such as account credentials, banking information, and credit/debit card numbers could become exposed to third parties.
