Rugj Ransomware

Another threatening STOP/Djvu variant has been detected by the infosec community. Named Rugj Ransomware, the threat operates in a similar fashion as all the other variants of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. The Rugj Ransomware is targeted at individual computer users predominantly and once inside their computers, Rugj will initiate a strong encryption process that will lock the files stored there. As a result, victims will no longer be able to open any documents, databases, archived, PDFs, images, photos, etc. Each locked file will have '.rugj' appended to its original name as a new extension. Finally, the threat will generate a new text file on the compromised systems named '_readme.txt' that will contain a ransom note with instructions for the users.

Rugj Ransomware's Demands

The ransom note is consistent with the ransom-demanding messages of other STOP/Djvu malware variants. It states that to receive the decryption key and software tool from the hackers, victims will have to pay a ransom of $980. If the note can be trusted, that sum can be reduced by 50% to $490. All that the affected users have to do is to initiate communication with the attackers within the first 72 hours following the ransomware attack. The hackers also allow for a single file to be sent to them that they will supposedly unlock and return to the user for free.
