Rugi Ransomware

The Rugi Ransomware is a potent threat that can devastate the computers it manages to infect. By initiating an encryption routine with an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm, the threat can lock a wide variety of file types, rendering them both unusable and inaccessible in the process. Rugi appears to be another variant from the infamous STOP/Djvu malware family. It joins other threats such as Hep, Rivd and Irjg. Although all variants operate in a virtually identical manner, they remain extremely threatening.

As part of its nefarious activities, Rugi will mark all files it affects by appending '.rugi' as a new extension to their original names. After locking all targeted file types, the threat will drop a ransom note on the infected machine. The ransom-demanding message will be contained inside a text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Details

The demands of Rugi are consistent with those of other STOP/Djvu ransomware. It tells victims that their data is not really lost but just encrypted. To restore their files, the affected users will have to buy the decryption key and software tool from the attackers by paying the demanded ransom. Rugi's operators put the price of the ransom at $980 but they also make an offer that will reduce that amount by 50%, down to $490. The only requirement is for the victims to message the hackers within the first 72 hours of Rugi Ransomware's infection.

The note also mentions that the hackers are willing to decrypt a single file for free. To send the chosen file and receive additional instructions, victims are directed towards messaging the two email addresses found in the ransom note - 'manager@mailtemp.ch' and 'supporthelp@airmail.cc.'
