Rookie Crypt Ransomware

The Rookie Crypt Ransomware, or sometimes found as RookieCrypt, is a potent ransomware threat. Any system infected by Rookie Crypt will be impacted severely, as the threat will encrypt nearly all of the files stored there with an uncrackable encryption algorithm. The goal of the cybercriminals responsible for unleashing this malware is to then extort their victims for money in exchange for the potential restoration of the files. The curious part about this particular threat is that it seems to be targeted at users from Turkey specifically. After all, its ransom note is written entirely in Turkish without any translations to other languages.

The Rookie Crypt Ransomware generates a unique ID number for each of its victims. This number will then be used to mark every encrypted file by being attached to the original filenames as a new extension. Upon completion of its encryption routine, the threat will deliver its ransom note as a text file named 'Rookie-Crypt .txt.' A copy of the ransom-bearing file will be dropped in every folder containing encrypted data. The actual ransom message is extremely short and a rough translation reveals that the cybercriminals simply tell their victim to initiate contact by sending a message to the 'rookiecrypt@gmail.com' email address.

The full text of the note in its original language is:

'bilgilerinizi istiyorsaniz iletisime geçin

rookiecrypt@gmail.com'

Translated to English it reads:

'contact me if you want your information

rookiecrypt@gmail.com'
