Protect-data-2022.xyz is a rogue website that appears to be mainly focused on running online tactics. When analyzed by infosec researchers, the page was observed showing a variant of the 'You've visited illegal infected website' Scam. It consists of bombarding visitors with numerous pop-up windows, all containing various fake security alerts. The likely goal of the fraudsters is to earn illegitimate commission fees by using fake scares to trick users into downloading a promoted application or buying a subscription to one.
This particular scheme pretends as if its warnings are coming from McAfee, a reputable security software company. One of the pop-up windows will even pretend to have conducted a threat scan that has identified multiple malware threats on the user's device. However, users should keep in mind that, first, McAfee Corp. is in no way connected to any of the dubious sites exploiting its name, logo, and brand, and, second, that no website can perform such scans on its own.
In addition, Protect-data-2022.xyz may try to convince users to enable its push notifications. This is another popular behavior among rogue websites, as it allows them to start delivering numerous, unwanted advertisements to users.
